Marketing department effectively commenced during the 2004/2005 academic session as an option under Agribusiness in the College of Agribusiness and Financial Management (CABFM). The approval for the College came after the consideration of the Senate Curriculum Committee Report and approval of the programme in 2003.
A proposal for the renaming and restructuring of CABFM was presented to MOUAU Senate and was approved at its 143rd Senate Regular meeting held on 30th May, 2012. Consequent upon that approval, the College was renamed; College of Management Sciences (COLMAS), to house Admin programmes. And on this premise the proposed department of marketing was re-positioned to run full B.Sc. Marketing programme under the new college with full effect from 2012/2013 academic session. The restructuring of academic content of the B.Sc. Marketing programme was then approved at the 149th Regular meeting of Senate held on the 1stFeburary, 2013.
The underlying philosophy of the department of marketing in an Agricultural and Agribusiness environment is to train/equip students with the knowledge of right tools, techniques and methods aimed at broadening and deepening their intellectual capacity in the area of marketing of agricultural and other primary products. This is geared towards strengthening their potential to be relevant in the supply chain management and in today’s competitive global business environment. This involves advancing research in agricultural marketing and other core business areas.
The philosophy of department of marketing is to educate and develop experts in the field of marketing that will transform and develop the academic and business sector in Nigeria and beyond.

The department believes that an effective education in marketing is one that contributes in a significant way to the solution of our Nation's problem. As infinite number of job opportunities awaits the marketing graduate, so are opportunities for serving the nation and humanity in general. To accomplish its stated purpose therefore, the department has carefully worked out a blend of institutional, faculty and departmental courses for its Marketing majors.

The minimum entry requirements into the B.Sc. marketing programme are G.C.E, WAEC, NECO, SSCE.(or equivalent) with credits in five (5)subjects obtained at not nor than two sittings. These five subjects must include English Language, Mathematics and Economics and any other two social science subjects. Admission into the program is through joint Admission and Matriculation examination (JAMB). The subject combination for the department is specified in the JAMB Brochure. However, students are also required to undergo a screening test.
Admission may also be offered to students transferring from other Universities recognized by Senate of the University of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, provided they meet the basic requirements of SSCE credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Economics and two Social Science subjects. Such transfers will be at levels considered as appropriate by the College Board of Management Sciences and Senate of the University.
To qualify for admission into a three-year degree programme, that is Direct Entry, candidates are required to possess the same academic qualifications as the candidates for the four year Degree Programme, and in addition, have a higher qualifications such as GCE A/L or OND. They are also expected to perform satisfactorily during the screening exercise conducted by the University.
Admission may also be offered to students transferring from other Universities recognized by the senate, provided they meet the basic requirements of SSCE credits in English Language, Mathematics, Economics, and two social science subjects. Such transfer will be at levels considered appropriate by the College Board of Management Sciences and the Senate.

In order to obtain a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Marketing, under 3 year programme, a student shall meet the following requirements:
Attend lectures, complete an approved programme of study and earn a minimum of 112 credit hours.
Complete Departmental requirements and achieve at least an “E” grade in not less than 49 credit hours of courses in the department.
Satisfy all financial obligations to the University and other requirements relating to attendance and character.
All Direct Entry students in the Department are required to offer and pass General Studies Courses (GSC) before graduation.
